Diesem Zentrum gehören das Institut für Kultur und Geistesgeschichte Asiens (IKGA), das Institut für Iranistik (IfI) sowie das Institut für Sozialanthropologie (ISA) an. Alle drei Forschungseinheiten arbeiten primär an kulturwissenschaftlichen, sozial- oder ideengeschichtlichen Studien über Zivilisationen, Regionen und Völker Asiens und bringen ihre jeweilige Fachtradition in das gemeinsame Spektrum ein.
Institut für die Kultur- und Geistesgeschichte Asiens
Der wissenschaftliche Schwerpunkt des IKGA liegt in der Erschließung von Originalquellen zur Philosophie- und Religionsgeschichte Indiens und Tibets, sowie zur Religions- und Mentalitätsgeschichte Japans. Die zumeist in der vormodernen Geschichte angesiedelten Arbeiten verstehen sich auch als Beitrag zum Verständnis des Traditionshintergrunds von Denken und Handeln in den modernen asiatischen Gesellschaften.
Das IfI erhellt soziokulturelle Modernisierungsprozesse der
iranischen Kulturregion (Iran, Kaukasus, Zentralasien bis nach China
und dem indischen Subkontinent). Wie steht Autochthones zu Übernahmen
aus dem Westen, was verändert sich strukturell? Methoden kommen
aus Literatur- und Sprachwissenschaft, Historie und Mentalitäten-
sowie Kunstgeschichte. Dazu treten traditionelle sprachwissenschaftliche
Aufgaben und Iranforschung mit Österreichbezug.
Instiut für Sozialanthropologie 
Arbeitsgebiet der Sozialanthropologie ist der Arabische Nahe Osten, Zentralasien und Südostasien einschließlich der Inselwelt im Indischen Ozean. Die Programmatik des ISA konzentriert sich auf Konsens und Konflikt, wobei dies insbesondere anhand des wirtschaftlichen Wandels, der Vermeidung und Austragung örtlicher Konflikte sowie anhand religiöser Diversität untersucht wird. Methodisch vereinigt das ISA ethnographische Feldforschung mit der Interpretation historischer Quellen, wissenschaftsgeschichtlicher Reflexion und vergleichenden Untersuchungen.
Gegenwärtiger Zentrumssprecher ist Dr. Florian Schwarz, Direktor des Instituts für Iranistik.
Profile
The Centre for Studies in Asian Cultures and Social Anthropology consists of three research units: the Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia (Institut für Kultur und Geistesgeschichte Asiens, IKGA), the Institute of Iranian Studies (IfI), and the Institute for Social Anthropology (ISA). The main focus of all three is the study of the cultures, societies and mentalities of major civilizations, regions and peoples in Asia. Each institute offers, within its own discipline, its own individual perspective to this common objective.
The research focus at the IKGA lies in the editing and analysis of original textual sources related to the philosophical and religious history of India and Tibet, as well as studies on the religious and mentality history of Japan. Most of the research deals with pre-modern history, attempting thereby at providing a basis for an understanding of the traditional foundations of the thought and action in modern Asian societies.
Research at the IfI deals with the socio-cultural modernization processes of the larger Iranian cultural region (Iran, the Caucasus, Central Asia as far as China, and the Indian Subcontinent). How do indigenous achievements compare to those which have been absorbed from the West, and what structural changes have occurred? Various methodological approaches are used at the Institute, including literature sciences, linguistics, history, art history, as well as the history of mentalities. In addition, the Institute deals with traditional linguistic inquiries and Iranian studies that are, in some way, related to Austria.
Most of the social-anthropological research projects at ISA focus on one of three main regions: the Arabian world and Northeast Africa, Central Asia (Mongolia, Tibet) or Southeast Asia. The chief aspects being examined are inner-societal changes, social and ritual shifts, as well as consensus and conflict. The methodology combines field work and the reception of original texts with comparative studies and theoretical reflection.
